Why Convert HEIC to WebP?

WebP is a modern image format developed by Google that provides excellent compression — often 25-35% smaller than equivalent JPG files with the same visual quality. It's supported by all major browsers and most image editors.

If your goal is web publishing or sharing online, WebP is often the best choice. It gives you smaller files than JPG while maintaining higher visual quality, and unlike HEIC, it's universally supported across platforms.

WebP also supports transparency (like PNG) and animation (like GIF), making it a versatile format for web use. If you need to optimize your iPhone photos for a website, converting HEIC to WebP is an excellent approach.

The trade-off compared to JPG is slightly less universal support in legacy software. However, all modern browsers, social media platforms, and image editors support WebP. For desktop editing in older software, JPG may still be the safer choice.

How HEIC to WEBP Conversion Works

This converter decodes HEIC files using libheif compiled to WebAssembly, renders the pixel data to an HTML5 Canvas element, and exports as WebP using the Canvas API's convertToBlob method with the image/webp MIME type.

WebP quality can be adjusted from 0.1 (smallest file, lowest quality) to 1.0 (largest file, highest quality). The default quality of 0.92 provides an excellent balance for most use cases. At this quality level, visual differences from the HEIC original are imperceptible for most images.

All processing happens client-side. The WASM decoder handles the HEIC/HEIF container format, extracting raw pixel data which is then passed to the browser's native WebP encoder. No server interaction occurs at any point.
